PURITY MONITORING

Protecting Tea Tree Oil Consumers.

Purity monitoring program from the global authority on tea tree oil.

The program.

Since 2013, ATTIA has collaborated with AgriFutures Australia and Southern Cross University’s Analytical Research Laboratory to monitor the purity of retail tea tree oil products from around the world.

In 2019, our work was enhanced with an official project in partnership with these organisations, and the University of Tasmania.

Outcomes to date.

~850

Products tested.

49.1%

Adulterated products.

In many cases, manufacturers are unaware that they are using adulterated oil.

Our program informs them of the compliance issues and potential safety risks for consumers.

Testing.

Pure tea tree oil can be identified by chiral purity testing, including the enantiomeric distribution of Melaleuca alternifolia. ⁺˜

Chiral purity testing is not currently required to pass any international standards (e.g. ISO, EP, BP, USP, AS), allowing companies to pass off adulterated tea tree oil as pure.
